When Dan and Paul contacted me about shooting their same sex wedding I had a feeling it was going to be pretty incredible. Not long after The Vote to finally legalise same sex marriage in Australia, we met on Skype to get to know each other and chat about the plans for the big day. After “a magical 10 years” together they were excited to tie the knot and wanted to do it in style, dropping hints of an international drag queen DJ and fireworks on Sydney harbour.

Fast forward to the day of the event and there were even more surprises. The styling of Sergeants Mess in Sydney by Ashdown & Bee and Aleksandra was unlike anything I’d ever seen. The cake was a masterpiece that looked as if it could have travelled from the future. Tillee Music wrote an original song for when Dan and Paul walked down the aisle together. Instead of a bridal party they had their families walk into the ceremony, and they kicked off the dance floor with some well rehearsed choreographed moves.

On the day everything ran flawlessly. The excitement that Dan and Paul had for marrying each other was infectious. It was pouring out of their bodies like two excited kids and engulfed anyone who came in contact with them. That was evident most during the ceremony when there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

I knew they were excited about the fireworks so I had to make sure I nailed those photos. I took the boys outside and positioned them so they were silhouetted by the action on Sydney Harbour. Later they told me that they really enjoyed that time alone, just the two of them.

Dan and Paul, you guys are amazing legends. You are both a lot of fun to hang out with so many laughs throughout the day. As my first same sex wedding since the law was changed you’ve set the bar so damn high and it won’t be forgotten anytime soon. Thank you for making my job the best in the world.
